Ludwig van Beethoven
1770-1827

A concert of some of the very few songs Ludwig van Beethoven wrote with directly religious themes, that are nevertheless transformed to grander spiritual matters. The music sets text of the poetry of an enlightenment-era titan, Christian Fürchtegott Gellert. We also hear one of Beethoven’s grandest songs: “To Hope,” written as he struggled to accept his deafness.
